Conrad Clarke

Conrad Clarke is a young artist who lives and works in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire after relocating from London in 2012. After completing an art foundation course at Kingston University, instead of going on to do a degree, he began working as a studio assistant to a handful of international artists, as well as developing his own studio and processes.

With the landscape as his main subject of reference, he works to convey the beauty and complexities of it using texture, pattern, and narrative elements throughout his work. Primarily working in oils he often employs bold colours and detailed mark making to create an exaggerated reality. The combination of traditional painting with experimental processes like using powdered pigments and lacquering creates something contemporary despite being a hugely explored subject matter.

Inspired by the narrative elements in Peter Doig’s work, the colours of Neal Tate, and the processes of artists like Anselm Kiefer and Eliezer Sonnenschein, there is fun uniqueness to the way he works and a power of creating beauty.
Always with the aim of re-enchanting the landscape, his depiction of a figurative reality can easily turn into an ambiguous, imaginative space that induces abstracted sensibilities into an otherwise ordinary practice.
Through his travels he continues to seek out inspiration from the natural world while honing in on the unique details that define each imagined place.

Conrad’s work has featured in publications like LOVE Magazine Issue 10, Metal Magazine Online, We Are Collision, as well as local publications like Cotswold Life and GL Weekend.
Exhibited:
Affordable Art Fair, Battersea, March 2017
